Broadband With No Line Rental

by Luke on February 25, 2009

For years Australians have felt “ripped off” having to pay $30 per month line rental to Telstra for a landline they never used. But an active phone line has always been the only way to get ADSL and ADSL2+. In this age of unlimited mobile phone plans and VoIP it just made no sense to many consumers to have to pay for an obsolete service like the landline line and its rental.

Finally Naked DSL is here and we can now get ADSL2+ broadband with no line rental! It has been released by iinet, Internode, TPG, Exetel and more. Telstra won’t ever release a Naked DSL service – not while they are still trying to protect their landline network. Of course they want everyone paying $360 per year!

One of the main questions with Naked DSL is about whether it is possible to still make landline calls. When you connect Naked DSL, you lose your active PSTN phone line and the associated capabilities of that line. But you can still make phone calls using your home phone, but using VoIP – Voice over Internet Protocol. You make phone calls by utilising your broadband connection.

Some providers can even transfer your current landline phone number to your VoIP service. If you are interested in keeping your landline number when you move to Naked DSL, we recommend iinet – click here for the iinet plans.
