DodoNaked DSL Review

Dodo

Data Allowance

Dodo starts with a small data allowance on their $39.99 plan at just 1GB peak and 1 GB off-peak. It jumps up to 5GB + 5GB on the $49.99 and then skyrockets to 10GB + 100GB on the $59.95 plan. All the plans up to $99.99 per month have 100GB of data in off peak times.

Uploads and downloads are counted in the data allowance. Peak times are a very reasonable 1pm until 1am, with off-peak times from 1am until 1pm.

Beware that on the two lowest plans if you exceed your data allowance, you will pay excess fees up to a point when your speed will be slowed.

Bundle Deals

The mobile bundles from Dodo are attractive. They don’t have a VoIP bundle, but by adding a mobile bundle you take $10 off the monthly price of your Naked DSL. For the entry level plan this is a bundled price of only $29.99 for 2GB of data (1GB + 1GB) – it is the cheapest Naked DSL plan on the market by far!

The $10 bundle discount is available for every Dodo Naked DSL plan. They have a range of Capped plans and offers to choose from.

Contract Options

Dodo has three contract lengths to choose from:

  • No contract – $129.99 set up fee
  • 12 months – $69.99 set up fee
  • 24 months – free set up

Service and Support

Dodo isn’t known for great customer service. So if you are looking for a reliable provider, with an Australian-based call centre, then look elsewhere. Double check the terms on your plan before you sign up so you know if excess usage fees apply to your plan. But if those things don’t bother you and you want big download limits at a cheap price – especially if you bundle your mobile – then Dodo could be right for you.

Freebies

Dodo Naked DSL gives you a free static IP address on all plans. You need to pay $1.90 per month if you want an anti-spam service. You also get 30MB of free webspace to host a personal website.

Connection Options

Dodo can connect you to Naked DSL even if you don’t have a current landline. If you do have a landline at the moment it will simply be disconnected once the conversion to Naked DSL takes place.

As Dodo doesn’t offer a VoIP service with its Naked DSL plans, you can’t keep or transfer your existing landline phone number. You can transfer a mobile number to Dodo’s mobile plans.

Summary

The Dodo Naked DSL plans are no-frills – cheap ADSL2+ broadband with high downloads limits and even cheaper if you bundle your mobile phone with them too. If you go for one of the cheapest plans, make sure you don’t exceed the data allowance, otherwise you’ll be paying some excess fees before your speed is shaped. If “cheap” is your prime objective and you’re not concerned by customer service or the lack thereof, then have a closer look at Dodo.
